Root Canal Treatment in Coquitlam

Root canal treatment is done to save the tooth when the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected or severely inflamed due to a large cavity, traumatic injury, fracture, or severe gum disease. The procedure involves cleaning out the infected pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth) and nerves, disinfecting the inside of the tooth, followed by filling and sealing the canals. Root canal treatment allows us to keep the tooth structure as opposed to removing the tooth entirely. Patient experience is the same as a filling but the procedure is more complex. Most of the times, it is still done in one appointment. After root canal treatment, a permanent filling is needed followed by a crown for full strength. If a tooth is severely weak, a retentive post is placed as well to hold the tooth structure together.

Alternatively, the tooth can be removed. In this case, the gap in dental arch often necessitates a dental implant or bridge. Therefore, It is preferable to save the tooth if possible through root canal (endodontic) treatment. Alternatively, the tooth can be removed.
